How to check and parse a user agent

Your current browser’s user agent appears automatically. To inspect another one, paste a string from a request log into the parser and select Analyze. Review the browser, operating system, engine, device and individual fragments, then use Copy to save the string. Select Show my UA to return to your browser’s results.

What is a user agent string?

A user agent is software that acts on behalf of a user, such as a browser, crawler or HTTP client. A user agent string is the text that software uses to describe itself in the HTTP User-Agent header. This page reads navigator.userAgent for your browser or parses a string you paste. The text often includes browser, engine and operating system details, plus historical compatibility tokens. It is a self-reported description, not verified proof of identity.

What a user agent can and cannot tell you

User agent strings may be reduced, frozen or spoofed, so parsing cannot guarantee the real browser, version or device. Client Hints add information only for the current browser when supported; they cannot recover missing details from a pasted string.

FAQ

What is a user agent string used for?

Websites use it for content adaptation, traffic analysis and clues about automated clients. A typical string describes software and device characteristics rather than a user account, but these details can contribute to fingerprinting. A customized string may contain other information, and the text alone cannot verify who sent it.

Why does the user agent start with Mozilla/5.0?

In the 1990s many websites served full-featured pages only to Netscape (code name Mozilla). Later browsers declared themselves as Mozilla to receive the same content, and the token has remained. Today Mozilla/5.0 is mainly a compatibility marker; it does not mean you are using Firefox or Mozilla software.

Why are some version numbers frozen at old values?

Some browsers reduce or freeze parts of the string to limit fingerprinting. For example, Windows 11 may still report NT 10.0, and Chrome on Android may use "K" instead of a device model. Supported browsers may provide extra details through Client Hints, but not every field or browser is available.

Can I change or fake my user agent?

Yes. Browser devtools, extensions and HTTP tools can override the string, so it is not proof of identity. This page shows navigator.userAgent, the value exposed to JavaScript. To check the User-Agent header sent with a specific HTTP request, inspect that request in your browser’s Network panel.

Does parsing upload my user agent?

Parsing runs locally in your browser. The parser does not upload the string for analysis, and anything you paste stays on your device.
